FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if I need to cancel an appointment?

Your child’s appointment time is reserved just for them. An appointment in our schedule is a time that we set specifically for your child! When a patient cancels without enough notice, another child loses the opportunity to receive care.
We do understand that emergencies sometimes arise and we will do our best to accommodate any possible need for change in your child scheduled appointment. We do ask that if your child is unable to attend their next appointment, please call our office at least (24) hours in advance.
We do not accept cancelation or appointment time change requests less than 24 hours before the appointment time over voice mail, email or fax.
No show appointments and appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice will be evaluated individually. However, we do reserve the right not to book further appointments.

How does nitrous oxide (laughing gas) work?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas with a faint, sweet smell. Nitrous oxide causes a sense of euphoria with little effect on the respiratory system.
Nitrous gas reduce anxiety and the potential for excessive movement from young patients, during longer appointments that require more cooperation than regular check-ups.
The great thing about nitrous oxide gas is that its effects are felt almost immediately, and are also almost immediately reversible. Within moments of removing the mask, patients will return to their pre-existing state.
Other advantage of nitrous oxide is that it reduces the gag reflex. This effect makes the dental appointment more comfortable for patients who gag easily.

How safe is nitrous oxide?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry nitrous oxide exhibits a superior safety profile with no recorded fatalities or cases of serious morbidity when used within recommended concentration. Adverse effects from use of nitrous oxide are rare. The most common adverse effects of nitrous oxide occurring in about 0.5% of patients are nausea or vomiting.
Your dentist may recommend your child consume only a light meal at least two to three hours prior to your appointment to reduce the risk of nausea and recommend during appointment.
During dental appointment under nitrous oxide sedation your child stays completely conscious and able to respond normally to verbal commands while maintaining their protective reflexes throughout the entire appointment.
The effects of nitrous gas inhalation are also far more predictable than many pharmaceuticals.

How safe are dental X-rays?

There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Pediatric dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which children are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation.

What happens on the first visit?

Our philosophy is grounded in the idea that every child is different! Depending on your child comfort level, we will introduce them to different aspects of the pediatric dental setting as they are ready.
An infant or toddler’s first dental visit often is treated as a short icebreaker. It is very important to establish a safe dental home. Taking the time to do this will make all your subsequent visits less stressful for your child. We will discuss important information regarding diet, hygiene, brushing, and fluoride toothpaste. Our staff will walk you through every step of your first visit to make this as easy and comfortable as it can possibly be for you and your child!
For older children we understand that fear of unknown is usually the biggest fear of children when it comes to dentist visit! We will take our time to introduce your child to the dental instruments and setting. If possible, we will take required x-rays and clean your child’s teeth.
